WHY I CHOSE MEDICINE-DORMUO ALOYSIUS NAMAALE
After receiving career and guidance counseling,I resorted to the idea of becoming a medical doctor. My dad died of Lumbar spondylosis 2years after I was born. From confirmed sources, he died due to the fact that there was no Doctor to perform a surgery on him. From the very day I was told about it,I swore to myself that I was gonna become a surgeon to prevent such death cases as my father's. So one can conclude without hesitation that my decision of choosing medicine as a career emanated from the death of my father. I already have prepared myself to be able to go through this herculean task of medical career. I read a lot of Pamphlets about the human body and how it works. I must say I love those pamphlets especially anatomy and physiology. Been a critical thinker and a person who wants to make difference and impact in peoples’ lives, I chose Doctor of medicine. I must say I have interest in the health needs of others. I am the type who hates seeing people suffer with diseases or other forms of illness. At the age of 15, I read a book, “Gifted Hands” by Dr. Ben Carson, which inspired and motivated my interest in pursuing medicine as a career because I could identify with his discovery of the joy of reading and his fascination with science. When I was 18years old, I had the opportunity to interact with such people as Dr. Thomas Dakurah,Dr. James Adams and Dr. Linda Danladi all at surgery department of Korlebu Teaching Hospital. This event occurred a little after I had finished my final exams in senior high school. To enable me have ease in this career, I prepared myself adequately whilst at Senior High school. Among the numerous programs offered in my school as at that time, I chose General Science. This has prepared me enough per the subjects (courses) I learnt. I read Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Elective Mathematics as my elective subjects and English Language, Core Mathematics, Social Studies and Integrated Science as my core (compulsory) subjects. Doctor of medicine is all about the human body and I have already learnt about it and how it works while at Senior High School in my Biology.
While at Senior high school, I had interest in higher education so I became Mathematics and Science competitor and a debater, I must say due to my academic abilities, I left behind a lot of legacies. I represented the school in numerous quiz and debate competitions and the school had always been second to none. Though I had a lot of financial difficulties back at high school, I scaled through with some little financial support from benevolent people. As one may see on my transcript, my grades may not be entirely excellent but trust me, they are among the best results my alma mater, Nandom Senior High School had ever had. This poor performance could be attributed to the poor nature of my high school. I swore to myself and to others that,if admitted into any medical college, I would prove to the world that the boy from a developing country in Africa (Ghana) could be one of the best medical doctors in the world. I would put in tremendous efforts to get the best grades. I'm not excellent with figures, but I’m not relenting in my efforts to doing better. I would be one of the best medical students ever in the history of medicine. I am focused, ambitious and I believe in reaching for the stars because these attributes have been instilled in me as a child.
